Structured Packing for Tower Systems
Engineered for distillation, absorption and scrubbing towers where efficient vapor-liquid contact and low pressure drop are required. Available for new columns, replacement projects and tower upgrades.
Wire Mesh Structured Packing
High-surface-area wire mesh packing for demanding separation duties. Commonly used in vacuum distillation, solvent recovery, fine chemical processing and other applications requiring high mass-transfer efficiency.
Custom Round Packing Sections
Round packing sections can be produced according to column diameter and divided for easier manway installation. Suitable for customized tower internals, replacement beds and retrofit projects.
Corrugated Structured Packing Blocks
Corrugated packing blocks provide an ordered flow path for gas and liquid inside the column. Sizes, materials and section dimensions can be customized to suit different operating and installation requirements.
Structured Packing Ready for Shipment
Finished structured packing can be packed by pallet, wooden case or protective wrapping according to shipment requirements. Suitable for international delivery, project supply and replacement orders where packing protection and handling efficiency are important.
Structured Packing Installation in Column
Structured packing is installed layer by layer inside the column to form an ordered mass-transfer bed. Proper orientation, segmentation and installation clearance help maintain stable gas-liquid flow and reliable operating performance.
Metal Corrugated Packing Elements
Corrugated metal sheets are arranged in alternating directions to create controlled flow channels inside the packing bed. This geometry supports efficient vapor-liquid distribution for distillation, absorption and other industrial separation processes.
Custom Structured Packing Modules
Packing modules can be fabricated according to tower diameter, bed dimensions and installation conditions. Custom section sizes are especially useful for retrofit, replacement and large-diameter columns where access through the manway must be considered.
Metal Structured Packing Configurations
Round Structured Packing Bed
Round structured packing beds are manufactured according to the internal diameter of the column and can be customized for different bed heights and section sizes. They are suitable for distillation, absorption and stripping services where stable gas-liquid contact, low pressure drop and reliable installation are required.
Flanged Structured Packing Assembly
Flanged structured packing assemblies combine packing elements with a ready-to-install equipment connection. This configuration is suitable for compact process units, pilot systems, laboratory equipment and customized separation devices where installation space, connection dimensions and operating conditions need to be carefully matched.
Cylindrical Structured Packing Module
Pre-assembled cylindrical packing modules are designed for convenient handling and direct placement inside process equipment. Diameter, height, material and internal packing geometry can be customized according to project requirements, making them useful for both new equipment and replacement applications.
Segmented Packing Blocks
Segmented structured packing blocks are commonly used in larger columns where full-size packing sections cannot pass through the manway. The packing can be divided into manageable sections for transport and field assembly while maintaining the required bed diameter, layer arrangement and installation accuracy.
Wire Mesh Structured Packing FAQ – Vacuum Distillation, BX/CY Types & Procurement
1. Wire Mesh Structured Packing vs. Wire Mesh Demister: What's the Difference?
Wire mesh structured packing and wire mesh demisters serve different functions in industrial separation equipment.
Wire mesh structured packing consists of corrugated woven metal gauze layers arranged to promote gas-liquid contact and mass transfer inside distillation or absorption columns.
Wire mesh demisters are generally made from knitted metal mesh and are designed to remove entrained liquid droplets from gas or vapor streams.
Although both products use metal wire structures, their functions, designs, and installation requirements are different.
2. Why Is Wire Mesh Structured Packing Used in Vacuum Distillation?
Wire mesh structured packing is commonly selected for vacuum distillation because it can provide high mass-transfer efficiency with relatively low pressure drop.
The woven metal gauze promotes liquid spreading and surface wetting, making it useful for selected low-liquid-loading and high-purity separation applications.
Its relatively low liquid holdup can also be beneficial when processing heat-sensitive materials.
Actual performance depends on packing geometry, operating pressure, liquid loading, vapor flow, and the properties of the chemical system.
3. BX vs. CY Wire Mesh Packing: Which Should I Choose?
BX and CY are commonly used designations for high-efficiency wire gauze structured packing.
BX-type packing is frequently considered for vacuum distillation and fine chemical separation where high efficiency and low pressure drop are important.
CY-type packing generally has a higher specific surface area and may be considered for applications requiring greater separation efficiency per unit packed height.
However, higher surface area can also affect hydraulic capacity and pressure drop.
The appropriate model should be selected according to separation requirements, column operating conditions, and the manufacturer's actual packing specifications.
4. How Does HETP Affect Wire Mesh Packing Efficiency?
HETP stands for Height Equivalent to a Theoretical Plate. It is a performance parameter used to describe the height of packing required to provide separation equivalent to one theoretical equilibrium stage under specified conditions.
A lower HETP generally indicates greater separation efficiency per unit packed height.
However, HETP is not a fixed property of wire mesh packing. It depends on the chemical system, vapor and liquid flow rates, operating pressure, packing geometry, and liquid distribution.
For new distillation projects, the required packing height should be determined through an appropriate process design evaluation rather than relying on a universal HETP value.
5. How Does Wire Mesh Packing Perform at Low Liquid Flow Rates?
Wire mesh structured packing can provide effective surface wetting at relatively low liquid loads because of the capillary characteristics of woven metal gauze.
This makes it useful for selected vacuum distillation, fine chemical purification, and precision separation applications.
However, insufficient or uneven liquid distribution may still reduce packing efficiency.
The acceptable operating range depends on packing geometry, liquid properties, and distributor performance. Minimum, normal, and maximum liquid flow rates should be considered during selection.
6. Is Wire Mesh Structured Packing Suitable for Fouling Applications?
Wire mesh structured packing is generally better suited to relatively clean process streams.
The fine woven structure may be susceptible to blockage when processing liquids containing suspended solids, crystallizing compounds, sticky deposits, or other fouling materials.
Fouling can increase pressure drop and reduce effective gas-liquid contact.
For services with significant contamination or fouling potential, alternative packing geometries with more open flow passages may be more appropriate.
Material compatibility and cleaning requirements should also be considered before selecting wire mesh packing.
7. Can Wire Mesh Packing Be Customized for Existing Distillation Columns?
Wire mesh structured packing elements can be manufactured to specified dimensions and configurations, subject to manufacturing feasibility.
For existing columns, important dimensions include tower internal diameter, required packing height, element height, support arrangement, and available installation access.
Segmented packing elements may be considered for larger columns or restricted manway openings.
Customers can provide existing drawings, packing specifications, photographs, or dimensional measurements to clarify replacement requirements.
Material grade, mesh construction, element dimensions, and assembly requirements should be confirmed before production.
